ESQUIRE’s Charles P. Pierce on our inadequate response to coronavirus

Spend four decades building the case that the federal government is a hindrance to personal freedom and economic prosperity and, sooner or later, people will think anybody can run it and will elect themselves an entertaining moron to do so. Spend four decades building the case that the federal government can’t do anything right and, sooner or later, it will forget how.
Government, like a hammer, is a tool, as the late Molly Ivins used to say. Like any other tool, there is a right way and a wrong way to use it, and that depends on the competence of the person using it. You can use it to build a house or you can use it to break your thumb. Alas, now, in the middle of a global pandemic, we seem to be governed by people compelled to hit themselves over the head with it, time after time, until blissful unconsciousness reasserts itself and they don’t have to think about the rest of us for a while.

Mitt Romney explained in just a few lines.

Passage from Charles Blow's November 1st NEW YORK TIMES column "Liberty To Lie" highlighted by me:
Unfortunately, there is some evidence that facts and the people who check them don’t carry the same weight that they once did.
First, the right’s disinformation machine is, explicitly and implicitly, making the argument that facts (science, math, evidence) are fungible and have been co-opted by liberal eggheads. They have declared war on facts in response to what they claim is a liberal war on faith.
This is an utterly false and ridiculous argument, but it works on some people.

I'm presuming these people look the other way when Romney sputters/falters after being challenged (i.e. the third debate) because they hear his voice and badly want to believe the Third Coming of Ronald Reagan (George W. Bush being the Second Coming) is among them.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS ON

Updated version of my 2007 poem THIRTY YEARS ON--regarding the high school graduating
class of 1977, of which I'm a member.

Chuck Norris and wife Gina's dog whistle to GOP evangelical Christians.

More coherent than Clint Eastwood's GOP convention talking-points improv, but resorts to invoking Ronald Reagan-as-God, plus playing on fundamentalist Christian fears of victimization.
Also, notice how Chuck and Gina don't motivate viewers to vote for Mitt Romney, but against "1000 years of darkness" presumably resulting from Barack Obama being re-elected for four additional yearws.

New low for THE LOS ANGELES TIMES Sunday magazine: wet kiss article about blacklist-era ogre Roy Brewer in today's Oscar issue.

Article by John Meroney, who has goo-gooed over the Roy Brewer/Ronald Reagan connection in the past (namely NATIONAL REVIEW).  Essentially Brewer (plus actor/John Ford regular Ward Bond) was the person Hollywood actors/writers/directors had to beg and plead with to show they weren't Communists and could they work again, please.

Sarah Palin--she'll be back.

Given the deep desire some Americans have for simple-minded, "I feel it in my gut so it's true" demagogues, it's safe to say that Sarah Palin stepping down as governor of Alaska will lead to a Richard Nixon-in-1968 or Ronald Reagan-in-1980 comeback:

Except that Palin--a dimbulb compared to Nixon or even Reagan--will have to rely almost 100% on divisiveness to make that comeback possible.
