Bill Maher okay with racial profiling of Muslim teen students.

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/maher-battles-guests-on-ahmed-mohamed-be-cautious-when-young-muslims-are-blowing-sht-up/

Sometimes--especially in the age of Colbert, Oliver and Wilmore--it's difficult to like Bill Maher when he digs in, ignores opposing views and quadruples down on his racial/terrorism fears and rants on "political correctness."

I wonder if this is a continuing overcompensation to/apology for his post-9/11 comments on POLITICALLY INCORRECT--in effect saying the terrorists couldn't be described as cowards because they did not carry out their attack from a remote location.

John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten not a fan of AMERICAN IDOL and THE VOICE.

Remembering an interview Bill Maher once gave where he voiced his strong dislike of contestant-elimination reality shows ("You're off the island!")

Now, here's John Lydon (who recently resurrected his seminal post-Sex Pistols band Public Image Ltd) with a similar-to-Maher take on THE VOICE and AMERICAN IDOL:

Andrew Breitbart, trickster/distortion artist of the right and the dark art of Winning Ugly.

Irony: In the 1960s, Breitbart's father-in-law Orson Bean was a regular panelist on a game show.

The show's title: TO TELL THE TRUTH.

Bill Maher still thinks Texas and Texans are uniformly stupid.

http://www.facebook.com/#!/video/video.php?v=219083881445180&oid=62507427296&comments

I don't always like everything Bill Maher says or does to get a laugh or (sometimes) a knee-jerk reaction from the audience and, as an ex-Texan, I winced at the "I'm-calling-all-of-you-STUPID" New Rule from last Friday's episode of REAL TIME.

Yes, Texas has fundamentalist Christians who are deeply intolerant of other faiths (Judaism and the LDS, to give just two examples)--and a history of pandering loudmouth Republicans (Bill Clements, George W. Bush, Rick Perry) who manage to outlast the more reasonable Democrats (center-to-left) in the governor's chair (Mark White, Ann Richards).

But the entire population of Texas shouldn't be subjected to "progressive" smirking and liberal derision.

Unfortunately, nuance and thoughtfulness don't go well with stand-up comedy--and it's useless to wish for Bill Maher to try for something that gets laughs, but also attempts to examine human hopes and fears instead of settling for the cheap sugar rush of easy button-pushing.

RIP COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/21/keith-olbermann-countdown-over_n_812506.html?igoogle=1
http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/22/olbermanns-msnbc-exit-was-weeks-in-the-making/?hp

So, as with Phil Donahue before him, Keith Olbermann finds himself a victim of changes in American politics (including a temporary false-equivalency form of discourse etiquette which will let the likes of Beck, O'Reilly, Coulter, Hannity, Palin, Malkin off the hook) and what looks to be ill winds blowing onto NBCUniversal from its soon-to-be-new-owner Comcast (or Kabletown, as 30 ROCK euphemistically calls it).

Sidebar #1: Early in 1975, the Smothers Brothers began a short-lived comeback variety series on NBC.  In their opening monologue, they joked about how they were evicted from television when Richard Nixon became President--and then were re-hired after Nixon's resignation.

Sidebar #2: It's really difficult to perpetuate an opinions-and-commentary show when your network is part of a too-sensitive-to-controversy corporate empire.  Just ask Bill Maher, dropkicked by Disney/ABC from POLITICALLY INCORRECT in 2001 when he made the statement about the 9/11 hijackers not being cowards

Sidebar #3: Keith Olbermann's show probably peaked when he, along with the rest of the mild-to-moderate progressives making up the audience, could rail in unison at the perfidies of the George Butch Jr. administration.  I'm presuming Olbermann felt squeezed by the NBC brass when the "change we can believe in" incense of 2008 Barack Obama wafted away to be replaced by the acquiescent, "demonize the Left" Republicratism of 2011 Barack Obama.  And, very likely, the temptation of NBC to dispose of Olbermann (attempted late last year when he was harassed for, as a host of a "commentary" show, making donations to political candidates--including the recently-wounded Gabrielle Giffords) and claim a victory for "civility" was huge.

A wreath on the grave of THE JAY LENO SHOW.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jay_Leno_Show

Two notes to add to the Wikipedia article:
1. I'm assuming that David Letterman was possessed by a malign form of glee in proposing the Super Bowl commercial for LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN to Jay Leno--knowing that Leno's shaky hold on a "good guy" persona would take a further hit with a "can't laugh at
myself" turndown.

2. Last week, Bill Maher made his final guest appearance on THE JAY LENO SHOW.
When Maher brought up the topic of Jay's "vulnerability" (see Note #1),
Leno cut Maher off and rushed to a commercial break.

One final prediction: The Jay/Dave ratings war may be a bit more unpredictable from March onwards. Yes, Leno will be Number One some nights--and Letterman will beat him on other occasions.

And more than a few of us will opt for Coco if he finds himself on Fox or Comedy Central.

When corporations run network news, corporations exempt themselves (and each other) from news coverage.

http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/08/04/olbermann/index.html

Something interesting I read in the last link above. Glenn Greenwald links to David Sirota's article re the "Keith Olbermann told to stop criticizing Bill O'Reilly so Fox News can quit reporting on General Electric" mess. In the comments section of Sirota's piece, one gets the idea that some people are okay with Olbermann standing down in this matter as long as he has an opportunity to be a "progressive" voice on a cable news channel.

Question is: How progressive can you be if you work for a news organization that has no firewall between its operations and edicts from the corporation that owns it?

CNBC: When you're a cable network encouraging the buying of stock in a scorched-earth economy.....

I'm not sure how many people saw CNBC's Erin Burnett (known as "International Superstar" to MSNBC' s Joe Scarborough) on last night's REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER.

Ms. Burnett, at one point, resorted to tired Republican talking points about the rich paying too many taxes and even used the phrase "wealth destruction"--which caused Maher to justifiably respond with the word bull----.

Read Nikki Finke's recent column entry about CNBC (which is apparently bludgeoning its audience to buy GE stock and raise it from its current doldrums): http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/hey-jeff-immelt-blame-your-own-cnbc/
[UPDATE 3/9/09: Here's a link to a HUFFINGTON POST column mentioning Erin Burnett, plus Joe "GE makes things" Scarborough doing his best to aid General Electric in its hours of pain and decreased profits: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/09/imorning-joei-breaks-out_n_173132.html]
And here's a suggestion for a future CNBC network-branding ad: Have the on-air personalities (including Ms. Burnett, Jim Cramer, Maria Bartiromo and fake-populist trader groupie Rick Santelli) sing or lip-sync an irony-free version of Randy Newman's "It's Money That Matters."
[UPDATE 3/13/09: Glenn Greenwald, in a post-mortem view of the Cramer/Jon Stewart sitdown on last night's THE DAILY SHOW, reminds us that the "don't question what Authority tells us" ethos is still followed by prominent journalists including David Gregory and Charles "Charlie" Gibson: http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/03/13/cramer/]
