Heard the first single ("Looking Up") from the forthcoming T-Bone Burnett-produced Elton John album--and it's so-so at best.
Rather than dwell on a past decade-and-a-half that produced only three memorable albums (SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST, the Leon Russell collaboration THE UNION and the remix/pastiche album created by Pinau GOOD MORNING TO THE NIGHT), I'll display a playlist of deep cuts/singles that didn't hit (and are worth seeking out):
1. SARTORIAL ELOQUENCE
2. TWO ROOMS (AT THE END OF THE WORLD)
3. NOBODY WINS
4. ELTON'S SONG
5. JUST LIKE BELGIUM
6. SPITEFUL CHILD
7. DEAR JOHN
8. RELIGION
9. ONE MORE ARROW
10. KISS THE BRIDE
11. RESTLESS
12. IN NEON
13. BREAKING HEARTS (AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE)
14. SOUL GLOVE
15. HEARTACHE ALL OVER THE WORLD
16. A WORD IN SPANISH
17. MONA LISAS AND MAD HATTERS (PART TWO)
18. HEAVY TRAFFIC
19. ARE YOU READY FOR LOVE (THOM BELL SESSIONS version)
20. HEALING HANDS
Entries about current events, arts and entertainment (including the competitive sport of poetry).

Meaningful words from commenter on NEW YORK magazine factoid about Meredith Vieira's return to NBC.
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/09/meredith_vieira_returning_to_n.html
Here's commenter JWFS on the above post:
who cares? my therapist tells me not to get "involved " in other people's lives--like meredith viera--"get your own life" --she is right-- i have kind of am empty life and have found gossip and interest in what "meredith is doing" a way to fill the hole-- who really cares what meredith is doing? the world around is collapsing around us--- when i take media "fasts" i am a much happier person--otherwise i get swallowed up by useless information
And here's what Elton John said about all this stuff 23 years ago (though the song GOODBYE MARLON BRANDO gets a literal-minded video treatment here):

Elton John and Billy Joel pass messages to each other through Jann Wenner.
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/billy-joel-responds-to-elton-johns-tough-love-in-the-new-rolling-stone-20110202
Some background: Billy Joel (and his music) used to be routinely hammered by ROLLING STONE until 1982--when, from the release of THE NYLON CURTAIN onwards, he was treated with more reverence. For awhile in recent years, it seemed like no issue of RS would go by without some kind of reference to Joel's comings-and-goings.
With regards to Elton John's comment about Billy Joel's creative stasis: I myself wonder why Joel doesn't at least try to write new songs for, say, a Broadway-intended musical.
It's a lot better than drinking, wrecking cars and self-sorrow.
