 first thought only thought

reach out and touch without asking

Moira Donegan on excuses made for Joe Biden’s behavior

Excerpted from THE GUARDIAN:
The argument that Biden’s inappropriate touching of women is somehow innocent also implies that feminists who object to Biden’s brand of touching have set the bar for women’s public dignity too high – especially considering who’s currently in the White House. Wouldn’t you rather have the infantilizing shoulder rubs and hair kisses of Joe Biden, the thinking goes, than the boorish pussy grabbing of Donald Trump? To those who argue that while Trump’s alleged harassment is unacceptable, Biden’s is tolerable, I would reply firmly that women should not have to accept either. A culture that does not tolerate sexual harassment – the kind of culture that ours must become – must not allow for lesser evils to continue simply because worse violations exist. It must value women more highly than that.

A female GOP operative on the negative effects of Trump misogyny.

From a POLITICO article about some Republicans getting Ready For Hillary:
"If we nominate Trump, [the party] is lost beyond this cycle. I think we lose women for a generation, in big numbers,” said Katie Packer, who served as Romney’s deputy campaign manager and now leads the Our Principles super PAC that spent $10 million in an effort to stop Trump.
“There’s a feeling among Republican women that I talk to that the people who would nominate this guy don’t have any real respect for us as women—especially professional women. They would rather see us in a Mad Men era, where women knew their place and catered to their husband, cooked dinner and met their sexual obligations and didn’t have any other role in society. And there are other people who are supporting him because the guy’s a blatant racist and they identify with that.
“So there’s a sense that if this is who my party is, I don’t really identify with it anymore.”

Poem NO FOOL LIKE THE DONALD--updated version.

SPY magazine
once called him "the short-fingered vulgarian"
it was the 80s
and most of us weren't ready to heed the warning:
it was easier to buy copies of
TRUMP: THE ART OF THE DEAL
and read gossip about his relentless pursuits
of women, real estate and casinos

the GOP went dither dither:
he won’t stay around that long
but Trump trumped his opponents
and he was truly ratings catnip to cable news
with not enough people getting truly upset
at the rage, racism and violence at rallies

he’s the all-but-certain nominee
with the violent ex-basketball coach
praising him for “having the guts”
to drop the nuclear bomb

so now the fate of our nation
rests on how many people are either
angry enough to vote for a billionaire
who cares next to nothing about them
or nihilistic enough
to put a blustery reality-show tyrant
into the highest office in the land
for the demented fun of it

The most reductive AOL clickbait I've seen lately.

Here it is:

Gwen Stefani flashes undies in red carpet dress

Talk about a revenge look! 'The Voice' judge showed her ex husband exactly what he's missing in a sheer gown that was definitely a head-turner.

And it's so wrong on at least two levels.

Twitter conversation between male and female film journalists.

  1. This happened a little while ago (names and Twitter handles omitted):

  2. Female journalist:
Marvel just announces Ant Man sequel in 2018 and 3 other films in 2020. How much do you want to bet that none of those star women.
  3. Male journalist:
Um, THE WASP is a woman. You need to RELAX sometimes...!
  4. Female journalist: 1 hour ago
thanks so much for that advice. Really helpful.
  5. Male journalist:
No, what's helpful is your knee-jerk "SEXISM!" reaction to every announcement when you have no idea what you're talking about.

  6. Female journalist:
  7. You are more than welcome to unfollow me if my stupidity upsets you so much. Have a great day.

Male journalist:
I don't think you're stupid at all... and admire what you do. But why not get behind companies that are actually doing it RIGHT?

Female journalist:
It's not enough by far. It's crumbs. I want a meal.

Male journalist:
You'll get one in 2019 with Captain Marvel. Wonder Woman in 2017. Not excited about The Girl on the Train? Joy? Moana? Ghostbusters?
  1. 2 minutes agoare more than welcome to unfollow me if my stupidity upsets you so much. Have a great day.

The private Paula Deen overwhelms the public Paula Deen.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/22/dining/paula-deen-is-a-no-show-on-today.html?smid=tw-nytimes

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/06/19/paula-deen-uses-the-n-word-7-shocking-details-from-her-deposition.html

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/paula-deen-defends-use-n-572562

From the Food Network's PAULA'S HOME COOKING web page (still online as of this writing), this description:
"With small-town life as her inspiration, Paula Deen brings uncomplicated and delicious home cooking to a series dedicated to the American traditions. Whether it's her stories or her recipes from her country kitchen, Paula has always had a gift for lifting spirits."

Now, here's most of the comment made by June Pagan on DEADLINE.com's Comments section under the updated article about Paula Deen and loss of endorsements (plus the Random House book deal):
"Discrimination on any level is not to be tolerated let alone endorsed. The Food Network and any business that is ethical should not be supporting any business that treats it’s employees like second class citizens. It is not right for employees to have to endure racial slurs and pornographic material in the workplace. Obviously ,the employees were afraid of losing their jobs. Paula Deen is a Southern cook who hit a stroke of luck by getting picked up by the Food Network. They gave her fame and she should have passed on that opportunity by making sure that all of her and her co-partners in business supported the people that supported them. Making uncomfortable statements, jokes and exposing them to unfair treatment was and is disghusting, low class and unacceptable."

What do Lena Dunham, Barbra Streisand, Jeannie Berlin and Janeane Garafolo have in common?

The question in the post title can be easily answered: they've all played roles where they have romantic/sexual relationships with handsome leading men (in Ms. Berlin's case, I'm referring to the now-forgotten film SHEILA LEVINE IS DEAD AND LIVING IN NEW YORK from 1975, which paired her with Roy Scheider)--and were greeted with sexist putdowns for doing so.

Here's a link to the JEZEBEL on-line article re last night's GIRLS episode about Lena Dunham's brief encounter with Patrick Wilson:

New poem: IT'S 2012, ISN'T IT?

my wife and I
are in a mountain tourist town
where a souvenir store
displays a cartoon T-shirt
with a stick-figure man
listening to a stick-figure woman
yelling at him in the first panel
the second panel
has stick-figure man
pushing stick-figure woman
off of a cliffside
with the caption PROBLEM SOLVED
underneath
we don't buy anything
from that store
